Tips On Vacation Travel Insurance

By Alison Heath

Often an overlooked but important part of your vacation is travel insurance. Travel insurance is an important thing to consider whether you're traveling to the next state or to a foreign country. Some of the reasons to have insurance are to cover medical expenses, life insurance for your family, or trip insurance when something goes wrong.

If you have medical coverage, check with your insurer to find out the specifics regarding your planned destination. You can buy medical coverage for the duration of your trip or for longer periods. Some travel insurance policies cover multiple trips of specific duration. Your travel for up to a year can even be covered.

Is skiing or mountain climbing vacation what you're planning for? You may want to consider evacuation insurance. If you need to be rescued it is quite possible that the you will end up with a hefty bill to pay for the service.

If your trip is taking an organized tour, going on a cruise, or just flying on an airplane, then you need cancellation insurance. At the last minute, you or a family member may get sick or unexpectedly your plans may change. Since refunds are not offered by many companies, you could be out thousands of dollars. Your plans can be messed up and there are things you can't really control. Refunds are not the easiest things to get sometimes.

Other popular coverage is loss of baggage, baggage delay, travel delay, dental, 24 Hour Traveler Assistance, and accidental death.

If you're driving out of the country, then checking with your auto insurer is important. You may need to buy whatever extra coverage is needed. Asking about an international roadside assistance policy is also important. When it comes to auto breakdowns and accidents, these problems are compounded abroad.

Checking with your credit card company is also a must. It's possible that you have some coverage if you use their card to purchase your vacation.

Traveling with a group will make it possible to get cheaper coverage. If you buy through a travel agent who makes nice commission, you sometimes will pay more for less coverage. This is not always the case but it's your money. To get the best deal, you need to shop around.
