Member Outreach

By Jack Wells

The health care industry is beginning to become more competitive and it is starting to be necessary for health insurance companies to work at reaching out to the members they currently have and potential new members. Member retention, which can be described as the number of members who continue to use the same health plan, is one important part of having a working health insurance company. A number of professionals think that this is reliant on getting high quality member outreach programs into play.

Member outreach programs can focus on a number of different plan members and aims at helping these members understand and know the services that are available to them and what will be most beneficial. It is the member outreach programs that will help patients understand the services that can help them most as well as how accessible these services and treatments are. They can also focus on the education of plan members, especially those with special or extraordinary health needs or requirements.

There can be a great deal of variety when it comes to member outreach programs and they can all have a different set of goal and audiences to target. Member outreach programs that are often used and seen in many health insurance companies include ones such as member retention outreach programs, early detection and screening programs, and community solution programs. All of these different programs have the goal to improve the quality of the health plan overall.

Taking a look at these programs in a little more detail, prescreening and early detection programs will work towards allowing access to prescreening and early detection methods for its members. It can also be accompanied by education to their members about the importance of prescreening and early detection tests. Some insurance companies will create a task team in order to get the word out to plan members about the program. It is the goal of these programs to get access to prescreening to as many members as possible.

Member outreach programs have a number of benefits both for the health insurance plan members as well as the health insurance companies. It not only helps the members gain more access and knowledge about treatments, but it helps to establish trust between the company and its members. It is a great way to show plan members that the focus is on their health, instead of on the bottom line. It also helps health insurance companies to increase their member satisfaction as well as overall member retention rates which can impact the cost effectiveness of the company.
