The Need For Care Enhancement

By Judy Cox

Immense efforts are underway by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to strengthen and improve the Medicare system. The Affordable Care Act is one such measure aimed at Care Enhancement, lowering costs, and long-term sustainability. This measure encompasses many aspects to include but not limited to; overall better care, patient safety, easier access to care, lower costs, fraud prevention and recovery, and improved outcomes and follow up.

Fraud and abuse prevention in the Medicare system is a vital part of The Affordable Care Act. Investing resources in preventing health care fraud and abuse is costly however those costs are usually recovered early on. Medicare fraud efforts have already recovered 10 + billion in a three year period. Focusing on fraud issues has the ability to not only recover funds but is also an efficient tactic in preventing future fraud.

In addition, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is linking payment to quality standards and offering new incentives for providers who deliver high-quality, coordinated care. Holding the provider to a higher standard of care, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is investing in itself and in turn, investing in the wellbeing of its consumers. Fostering improvement in the quality, safety, and efficiency of care in hospitals, physicians' offices, and other settings is, and will continue to produce long-term results.

Lowering Medicare Costs by improving care is a complex process. Offering Medicare consumers accessibility to little or no cost wellness visits and prescription drugs eventually reduces costs. With the new options, many Medicare consumers are now addressing their health concerns rather than avoiding them. Medicare consumers have the ability to be more pro-active and involved in their own health and wellness. This preventative care is contributing to the improvement of overall health for the individuals who utilize it. Millions of Medicare beneficiaries used at least one preventive benefit last year and the numbers continue to grow.

The Affordable Care Act is already making a positive difference in the Medicare system and in the lives of Medicare recipients. The results received, thus far, are positive and encouraging. Health care providers are encouraged to provide enhanced care and their patients are receiving access to a higher-quality of care. Expectations of the years ahead indicate that continued savings will be generated while the quality and availability of care increases. Despite the effort and expense it takes to implement a plan such as this, with time, the plan will come to fruition.
