Information Needed When Applying For A Fiance Visa

By Melody Lyons

Many people nowadays meet and marry people who are not citizens of their own country. When American citizens become engaged to residents of other nations, the foreign partner often has to apply for a fiance visa. This allows the couple to spend time together in the United States.

It is often called the K nonimmigrant and applying for it is fairly straightforward. Whether persons are originally from Canada, Jamaica, Poland or the Netherlands they can fill out the required documentation. This is a provision under US law that reduces the time couples spend apart.

People who would like to go to the United States as the future spouse of an American must make certain information available. They must provide this data in a hard copy format by employing the forms designed for this purpose. All questions are to be answered clearly and accurately. Their responses help to determine eligibility.

Persons must supply their present marital status, date of birth, names of children, place of birth, full name and previous marital status. If they are divorced they must explain in writing why that marriage was ended. They must also provide all the information which is asked for on the DS156.

These two forms have to be accompanied by other documents where necessary, to prove the statements that have been made. Some of these are a divorce decree, engagement evidence, birth certificates for your kids and police certificates. If a partner in the past died, you must provide the death record. You must also have evidence of financial support.

A United States fiance visa application should be submitted along with a recent photograph. This photo must have been taken within the last six months. It should show all your facial features clearly and have sufficient space above and below your head. You may scan it or provide a digital copy.
