Protect Yourself On Vacations, Get Travel Insurance

By Greg Tilley

The last thing in anyone's mind when planning a vacation is the possibility that things could go wrong.

But realizing that a lot can go wrong can be the first step to protecting yourself, because that can lead to the realization that travel insurance needs to be part of your planning.

Whether you're planning a drive out of state, a cruise, or your dream vacation, trip insurance can help protect you and your investment if something happens to interrupt, delay, or even cancel your vacation.

There are many options to choose from, from policies that can refund the cost of your trip if you are forced to cancel to those that provide assistance if you find yourself stranded, with lost luggage or fallen ill.

People who are members of groups like the AAA, traveling with in the United States and are not paying reservation fees, may not feel the need for travel insurance. However, if you get sick or get into an accident in another state, you could be facing large medical bills since most health insurance policies are limited to the state where they were purchased and often to a set network.

Medical travel insurance can assist you with these costs in the U.S. or abroad, depending on the type of coverage. Should you require a prolonged stay in the hospital, certain policies are in place to assist with your relocation to a facility which is more convenient for you.

What happens if a medical emergency occurs just before departure and you are unable to continue your trip where reservation fees and plane tickets have already been paid? Trip cancellation insurance can cover the cost for the "non refundable" prepaid travel expenses, although this might not make up for having to cancel the vacation you dreamed of but helps to lessen the burden. Illness, an accident or death involving the insured, a family member or traveling companion may be some of the accepted reasons for cancelling your trip that is covered. Work related reasons or even virtually any reason at all, may even be accepted by some policies.

Some types of travel insurance may assist in lost luggage or canceled flights, cover multiple trips in one year, whose target markets are students, business travelers, missionaries, or those in a high risk line of work, assist family members in the recovery of the body of a traveler who dies while traveling, or provide a life insurance benefit for those whose family members die in a traveling accident.

Preparation for worst can pay off even if none of us want to think about them on our vacation. Peace of mind might be all you get, but if something does go wrong, depending on the coverage, type of trip and the circumstances, it certainly pays off.
